Upcoming 8th Africa Animal Welfare Conference: Advancing Welfare & Sustainability through Partnerships

AU-IBAR from 30th September to 2nd October 2024 is set to join other partners; the World Animal Protection, Donkey Sanctuary, Brooke Hospitals for Animals and Animal People, among others, for the support provided towards the 8th Africa Animal Welfare Conference – Action 2024, which this year is hosted by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)and the Government and the People of the Republic of Kenya for hosting this conference. Under the theme: Partnership Actions to Improve Animal Welfare and Environmental Sustainability

This event will bring together key stakeholders from across Africa and the world to address critical issues at the intersection of animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and human development. Over the course of three days, participants will engage in plenary sessions, panel discussions, and breakout groups focusing on innovative solutions for improving animal welfare, advancing sustainable food systems, and tackling pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and disaster preparedness.

The event will feature plenary sessions, panel discussions, and breakout groups focusing on the role of innovative solutions in enhancing animal welfare, promoting sustainable food systems, and addressing environmental challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Some of the main highlights include a keynote address (TBC) by H.E. Dr. William S. Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, and messages from global leaders in animal welfare and environmental conservation. 

AU-IBAR will play a critical role during the event with several specialized sessions. The AU-IBAR-led session, “Integrating Animal Welfare into Sustainable Livestock Development and Disaster Risk Preparedness,” will explore the crucial role of animal welfare in sustainable livestock management and the enhancement of disaster preparedness within the livestock sector. This will be complemented by an AU-IBAR breakout session on “Animal Welfare and One Health, where experts will discuss how the One Health approach integrates animal welfare into broader efforts to ensure healthy ecosystems, livestock, and communities. Additionally, AU-IBAR will host a panel discussion titled “Harnessing Regional Partnerships for Improved Animal Welfare in Africa”, focusing on best practices and regional strategies to enhance animal welfare across the continent.

Other key sessions include discussions on the importance of Farm and Working Animals in African economies and ecosystems, UNEP-led sessions examining stakeholder contributions to the outcomes of UNEA-6, and panels on wildlife conservation, focusing on transboundary efforts to combat wildlife trafficking. 

The event will culminate with closing remarks by Dr. Allan Azegele, Director of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Republic of Kenya, summarizing the resolutions and outlining the way forward for strengthening animal welfare and environmental sustainability in Africa. This landmark conference promises to be a key platform for driving collaboration and action on animal welfare across the continent.
