Fish-Gov NEWS Communiqué - Expert Review Meeting on Findings of the Verifcation Missions to Short-Listed Institutions for Selection as African Centres of Excellence Bulletin of Animal Health and Production in Africa (BAHPA) Special Edition of March 2018

11th – 13th February 2016, Cairo, Egypt. A consultative workshop on aquaculture environmental management for the North Africa and Great Lakes Region was organised by the African Union Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) in collaboration with the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NPCA) with support from the European Union from the 11-13 February 2016 in Cairo, Egypt. The overall focus of this workshop was to embark upon the development of appropriate regional and continental frameworks on environmental management for sustainable aquaculture development that shall provide the basis for sectoral policy and management. The specific objectives of this workshop were to (i) inform and enable participants apply the principles of ecosystems approach to aquaculture at the sectoral level; (ii) identify key components to develop and implement appropriate mechanisms for specific regional and national environmental management of aquatic animal production systems; and (iii) formulate draft regional frameworks for environmental management for commercial aquaculture development and zonation for Northern African.

The meeting was attended by over 10 participants from North African region including 3 African Union member states namely Algeria, Egypt and Mauritania; 4 Professors respectively from Suez Canal University, Benha University, National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, Agricultural Research Center (ARC); 2 representatives from WorldFish and lastly African Union staff.

The meeting was officially opened by Prof Ahmed El-sawahly, Director of AU-IBAR. The meeting was informed by several technical presentations.

The main outcomes of the meeting were:

1. Creation of awareness on environmental impact assessment in aquaculture systems
2. Broadening horizons of participant’s principles of ecosystems approach to aquaculture at the sectoral level.
3. Identification of main ecosystems and biosecurity issues in aquaculture environmental management systems in North Africa.
4. Identification of socio-economic issues (including policy and governance) in aquaculture environmental management systems in North Africa.
5. Development of draft guidelines for environmental management framework for sustainable aquaculture development North Africa.
