Strengthening the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector in Africa: FishGoV 2 holds first Technical and Steering Committee Meetings

AU-IBAR is hosting the 1st Fisheries Governance Project 2 (FishGov 2) Technical and Steering Committee Meetings on the 15th and 16th April, 2021, respectively. The Technical Committee will be chaired by AU-IBAR Officer in Charge, Mr. Talal Kishlaf. Other attendees of the technical meeting will include the Regional Economic Communities, Technical Directors in Fisheries and Aquaculture, private sector players. In addition to FishGov 2 staff, in attendance will be Dr. Clement Adjorlolo, AUDA-NEPAD, and the Director of Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Dr. Godfrey Bahiigwa. H.E. Ambassador Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) will chair the Steering Committee Meeting. 

As a follow up of First phase of Fisheries Governance project (2018), FishGov2’s overall objective is to enhance the contribution of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture to the achievement of the AU Agenda 2063’s objectives, notably in terms of food security, livelihoods and wealth creation. Taking into account lessons learnt from FishGov 1 and contextual changes, the project address 3 strategic issues where collaboration with AU institutions, such as AUDA-NEPAD. AU-IBAR is responsible for the overall management and coordination of the various actions.

The three strategic actions comprise:
•    Supporting evidence-based decision making on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture through improved knowledge, effective consultation, solid reporting and the promotion of cross-sectoral approaches. 
•    Maintaining coherent implementation of the PFRS at continental, regional and national level. 
•    Strengthening the African voice on issues of fisheries and aquaculture in international fora and domestication of global instruments.     


FishGov 2 will provide additional value and will complement EU Action at regional and national levels. The project is implementing key policy instruments, such as the Policy Framework and Reform Strategy (PFRS) for Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the Africa Blue Economy Strategy.
